Anne Frank ================================================================== TODAY'S ACTION Recently, I caught news coverage touting the benefits of "happiness". The report seemed to imply a connection between having a positive outlook and overall well-being and longevity. A little research revealed study after study that seems to agree. Two such examples include: Starting in the 1930's, researchers began examining the personal diaries of nuns, specifically noting references to positive feelings and the number of different types of positive words. Nuns with positive thoughts were found to live an average of nine years longer than nuns with more negative thoughts. In another study, CMU researchers in Pittsburgh found that people who report a higher degree of happiness are more resistant to the flu and other viruses. The happiest people, the people with the highest scores, became ill less frequently and those who did become sick had less severe symptoms and improved more quickly. So, what can be done to drive our own happiness quotient up? Keeping a happiness journal. The simple act of recording happy thoughts and feelings of gratitude prevents them from being lost in the busy-ness of the day. Reflection, prayer or meditation turns one's focus inward, helping us to better tune into our well-being. And finally, taking care of our own unique physiology. There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to determine which activities make a person happy. What jogging does for one person, gardening will do for the next. What is it that makes YOU happy? When was the last time you experienced it? Try today to sprinkle a little happiness into your day... but don't just stop there. Take time to really savor the experience. Unknown ================================================================== TODAY'S ACTION In the fast-paced world that we all live in, it's sometimes easier to fire off a quick email or text rather than picking up the phone. I was reminded a while back of the power of the human voice when I sensed that a client of mine seemed "miffed". Our work together had gone well, so I wasn't sure why things would feel so off-kilter. When I inquired, the client expressed concern that I wasn't engaged enough... that perhaps I didn't WANT to work with him. At first, I was taken by surprise. I couldn't figure out what could have possibly given him that impression. I've always taken great pride in taking excellent care of my customers. With time, I came to realize that the problem didn't lie in the work that I had done, but rather in my choice of communication strategy. You see, I'm an emailer. I type quickly and email tends to be my preferred method for staying in touch with people. Rather than a time-consuming phone call that may not be ideally timed, the recipient of an email can reply when he/she has the time. Yet, email can easily be construed as avoidant... and that's exactly what happened with this particular client. While I felt that I was staying in touch between sessions, the client didn't interpret my emails in the same way. Do you have clients, colleagues or friends with whom email is your primary mode of communication? When was the last time you had a "live" conversation with them on the phone or face-to-face? If it's been a while, take a few moments today to do a high-quality check-in. Pick up the phone and give them a call, even if it's just to say that you were thinking of them. Reactions? In the art world, the right frame can dramatically change the value of an art piece.
While a painting can stay exactly the same, our experience of it changes based on the style, coloring, and design of the frame.
There's a lot about ourselves that we cannot go back and change. We cannot change who our parents are, or where we were born, or where we went to school, or the choices that we made as we travelled down life's path.
It's as if our life is a painting and that portion of the painting is already complete. What we do have control over is the framing. We can choose a frame that brings out the best in our art.
I'm curious how you've been framing your life. When you encounter set-backs, how do you see yourself?

I discovered a fun resource a few weeks ago and I've played with it a couple of times since. It's an online "brainstorming" site - www.brainreactions.net .
(Nope, I'm not getting a financial kick-back from the site's owners... just sharing this resource because I thought it was a cool find and that you might find it helpful!)
You can post any question you want and get ideas generated from the website's visitors.

As a business strategist, I often talk with clients about how well their actions align with what they say they want.
Typically, this is from a business goals perspective... for example, if they say they want more revenue, then I look at their behaviors to see if they are actually DOING things that relate to increasing their revenue.
Interestingly, I often find that most people are NOT spending time on the things that they say they value.
Today, think about how this principle applies to your life... how well do your behaviors align with what you say you want in your life?
For example,
If you SAY you value creativity and innovation, where would I see that playing out in your life?
If you SAY you value spirituality, where would I see that playing out in your life?
If you SAY you value connectedness to your family, where would I see that playing out in your life?
